Is there a perfect crime? This is a question that pops into my head from time to time. The problem with attempting to answering this question is that perfect crime is a crime we didn’t even know was committed. While I have never been able to propose the perfect crime I hypothesized that the perfect crime would be one with no motives. After watching countless hours of crime and mystery shows I have noticed that detectives always start by discerning a motive. So if a crime has no motives then the detectives are stop dead in their tracks…or so I thought. I recently came across a news that reported of the arrest of the “tree ninja” from Brighton Maschichussets. The infamous tree ninja had been endlessly attacking small trees for many years. With no witnesses, no suspects, and most importantly no motives the tree slayer continued to ruthlessly berates the small town’s saplings with no stop in sight. This crime proved itself to be unsolvable for many years and think it was due to the lack of motive for the crime. It wasn’t until Boston Police staked out a tree where they suspected the ninja would make his next victim. They set up cameras and caught 65 year old Joseph Spizza red handed. Many questions have entered my head as I attempted to piece together the tree ninja’s crime. I wondered what does he gain, why trees, and why do it more than once? While I can make as many best guesses as I want, I will never have the answers to my questions unless they are answered by Spizza himself. Several news outlets have attempted to contact his lawyer but have gotten no statements. You may be asking yourself “why would someone take time out of there day to talk about the tree ninja”. While, by definition, the tree ninja’s crime, is not the perfect crime it acts as a sort of crime/science experiment to test my original hypothesis: a perfect crime would be one with no motives. While Joseph Spizza disproves my hypothesis I can now create a new perfect crime.
